Labeled by the B4C and Fibres Energivie competitiveness clusters, the ExtraForEst project was the winner of the “Innovation and investment for upstream forestry” call for projects launched by the French Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MAAF) in 2017.
Its aim is to assess the quantity and quality of chemical compounds present in the main tree species of the Grand Est and Bourgogne Franche Comté regions in order to supply potential new markets and support the forestry-wood industry.
Researchers working on the ExtraForEst project are digitally modeling a tree to obtain the quantity of extractables it contains, in relation to the tree’s characteristics (number of nodes, branches, etc.). The challenge is as follows: if we can model the growth and technological properties of a tree, we can also do so at plot level, depending on the silviculture chosen.
Extractibles should be valorized in niche, high value-added markets. These markets correspond to the following sectors
The ExtraForEst project has completed the first stage, which focused on forest resources, quantifying and qualifying the extractives available in the 5 main tree species of the Grand Est and Bourgogne Franche-Comté regions. 2020 marks a turning point in the transition from laboratory to industrial scale.
The companies of the Grand Est region are seizing the opportunity through a platform project that will pool equipment and skills and have two main functions:
